Volunteer Robyn Kanowitz talks ABCA

A few years ago a friend invited me to join her on a Saturday morning packing books for the children of Africa and that casual invitation started my involvement with ABCA.

I really do believe that the gift of education is the key to empowering people, and reading and books are the building blocks of education. To be able to literally provide these building blocks to those who would otherwise not have access to them, is crucial. And it all starts with showing the children the power and pleasure of reading. That opens a world of opportunities for them.

For me personally, being involved with ABCA, provides a connection to Africa which I crave and value. Despite having left South Africa 29 years ago, and feeling lucky and grateful to be living in Australia, the deep emotional connection to my African roots remains. Volunteering for ABCA enables me to feel I can repay, in a very small way the country where I was born and grew up and spent a very privileged childhood.

And so the inspirational volunteers of ABCA provide me with the platform to engage with other like-minded people to enable the provision of opportunities and enjoyment to the children of Africa.
