ABOUT ABCA

Australian Books for Children of Africa Ltd (ABCA), an Australian registered charity, commenced operations in 2003 and has a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status with the Australian Tax Office. Donations of $2 and over are tax deductible.

With your support, ABCA increases educational opportunities for children in under-resourced African communities by providing access to pre-loved, high-quality, age-appropriate English books. More books in classrooms and libraries help develop stronger literacy skills, improve learning environments and increase educational confidence for children, as well as extend support to teachers through practical, useful educational work materials.

Because of you, over 350,000 books have reached thousands of children in over 423 African schools and organisations across South Africa, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Alongside financial support, you can get involved through volunteering and help build community connections and a sense of purpose while advancing educational equity.

WHAT WE DO

• We source books and educational materials from schools, libraries, publishers, households, and the wider community across Australia, and build strong relationships with Australian schools, students, and libraries to encourage donations and fundraising support.

• Through our Australian Schools Programme, we foster a culture of giving while engaging students from primary through secondary levels.

• We work closely with schools, organisations, and educators across Africa to ensure donated books are relevant to local learning needs and reach communities where they can have the greatest impact.

• Alongside book distribution, we support educational enrichment initiatives including sponsored writing competitions that cultivate the next generation of writers in Uganda and Kenya, and the Read Out Loud programme for underprivileged children in Kenya.
